SUPPORT TALENT. WE ARE NOT ALL ACADEMICIANS

For a long time in life, people young men and women are often advised to put some considerable amount of time and focus on their talents and passions. This however becomes sarcastic when the same people become extra-reluctant in making sure that the talented and passionate students thrive in their areas of specialization.

For many young people joining institutions of higher learning, it is often viewed as an opportunity to showcase talent and thrive in an art of choice, be it in music, theater, spoken words, games, etc. These dreams sometimes end up being dreams for lack of nurture.
I have always believed that young minds have innovative minds that can bring tangible change in the areas of talent that they express passion and intent. With lack of financial support, moral support, the opportunity to showcase what they can and an appropriate company that will help sharpen their skills in these fields, the youth remain a vulnerable lot and a source of all bad things that no one wishes to hear about.
Universities and colleges play a key role in this. Having gone through primary and secondary school(in Kenya), I believe students should be adequately supported in co- Curricular activities, especially those that show high talent, and those that are in line with the courses offered by such institutions.
Let's take a case where an institution bans and/or decides not to support student- centered activities, but is ready to offer high allowances to a few people in management positions... Not because of their performance records, but just as a token to show solidarity in management.
I will not be shocked to realize that such leadership never give chance to improve, nor to be corrected by those they lead.
In this 21st Century, as we talk of transformational leadership, leaders need to understand the difference between being a boss and a leader.
Dictatorship is long overtaken by time and should be nowhere in any leader's vocabulary in this age.
I challenge all leaders to learn to lead by example, be the citizen they want others to be, serve others as they would wish to be. As well as be realistic and open minded in their leadership and management techniques.
If a leader cannot promote talent and passion, who will? Indeed, talent pays and should be equally regarded as is the case with academics.
Leaders, promote talent don't kill it.
