HOW TO BECOME A BETTER STUDENT (PART 1)

Earlier this year, while everyone was still in their New year celebration moods, I had the pleasure of attending a lecture at my local church by Dr. Ontieri James; a senior lecturer at Maasai Mara University; who was invited by our church priest to share a word of encouragement to the church’s youth and I thought it wise to share with you some of the lessons I learnt.
They are simple but important to everyone reading this post. I have decided to present them in two sessions.

Based on the theme; Education makes us all equal;
Dr. Ontieri tried to encourage young souls to invest in it as It’s the only way to chase away poverty. However, I would like to give it a different tittle “How to become a better student (part 1)

The following are some of the areas that I am going to share with you in this first section

Be prayerful

It is God that gives life and everything under the sun was made by him. He therefore reserves all the powers to everything he wishes at will. Ask him to give your life to experience another day.

Focus

Keep your eyes on your goal until you achieve it. Most people fail in life because of divided attention. As young people who are still energetic and brilliant in many ways, you should always endeavor to achieve all your goals in life.
Have an aim/ target for all you want to do. Dr. Ontieri emphasized that lack of aims/goals is the greatest reason why we lose many young and brave minds to drugs, alcohol and substance abuse.

Lack of guiding principles in life is a sure way to head in the wrong direction.

Achievement of one’s goals in life is one of the best ways to self-test an individual’s success

Walk a lonely path that will lead to where you want to be.

Group think and group vigor leads to no destination but destruction.

You should learn to follow the lonely path that is full of pain sorrow and sacrifice.

Acknowledging the reality that most youths fear straining to achieve what they want, Dr. Ontieri alluded to the story of Ben Carson who went against all odds to be the best neuro-surgeon in the world.

Taking keen interest in things that people do when they are under group influence, we were adviced to decist from doing things in groups and instead be self driven in all our undertakings

Manage your time in a profitable manner

“A day comes with some gifts in the morning and goes with them back in the evening. Whoever is first to wake will be the first to receive them, just as the last to beds will bag all the remaining.”
Always allocate the most time to matters you consider most profitable to you.

One of my professors once told me that ‘beginning something is always difficult, but when you get the momentum and get used to it, stopping will be an abomination.’  Professor Tabitha Sewe has always emphasized on reading and being up to date with current information.

Let your actions speak for you.

Don't ask people what they think you are. Know who you are and compare yourself to no one.
Be confident that in all you do, you are the best that can do it. However, always learn to take guidance and corrections when need be.

We are all unique in our own ways and just as the English saying goes, “Every dog has its day”. We all have to follow our individual paths to success.

Other people’s success should only encourage us to add more effort in what we do. Every action we undertake in life adds up to the great story of your life that cannot be written by any other person rather than ourselves.

Watch out for the second session of as we share more on How to become a better student- part 2.

Feel free to comment on any of my posts, so we can share ideas on how to make this site better and bigger.
